ARTIST GUEST OF HONOR at GEN CON

Road to Gen Con 2015  Comments Off on ARTIST GUEST OF HONOR at GEN CON
Jul 222015

diNew York Times bestselling author/illustrator TONY DITERLIZZI is this year’s ARTIST GUEST OF HONOR at GEN CON.  Tony will be promoting his new book REALMS: THE ROLEPLAYING GAME ART OF TONY DITERLIZZI (Dark Horse Books).  Here are Tony’s thoughts about GenCon, where he launched his worldwide bestselling THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES (co-created with Holly Black) in 2003.  http://diterlizzi.com/home/gen-con-artist-guest-of-honor/

And here is a snippet from Guillermo Del Toro’s foreword for REALMS:

“Tony’s work has a distinct flair, a love for monsters if you will.   His creatures have the charm of Henson or Rackham but they carry with them hints of their own ecosystem.  He stands alone as a creator of worlds and a weaver of tales.  May you treasure these art pieces as much as I do.”  – Guillermo del Toro  (Director of PAN’S LABYRINTH, HELLBOY and PACIFIC RIM).

It’s of interest that Tony got his start doing game art for D&D and is now one of the most renowned children’s authors in the world…there must be a parallel to be explored there…I think the commonality resides in the ability to “world-build.”

Artist Guest of Honor

Gen Con is thrilled to announce the 2015 Artist Guest of Honor Tony DiTerlizzi.

Tony will host several events at the show, make sure to check them out when Event Registration opens in May. When not hosting his events, you can find Tony at his booth in the Art Show. Stop by and say “hi!”

About Tony:

DRAGONS, SPACE MONSTERS, GOBLINS, and insects—the characters that inhabit Tony DiTerlizzi’s world haven’t changed since he was a kid growing up in Florida.

In 1981, after watching The Dark Crystal and playing Dungeons & Dragons, 12-year-old Tony created a field guide on fantastical creatures. He would return to this premise many years later as the genesis for the multi-million bestselling chapter book series, The Spiderwick Chronicles.

Eleven years later, Tony began working for TSR where his art soon became synonymous with the Planescape RPG. Throughout the decade he also freelanced with White Wolf Games and Wizards of the Coast, where he painted cards for Magic: The Gathering.

This year marks the release of Realms: The Roleplaying Game Art of Tony DiTerlizzi (published by Dark Horse Books) – a first-ever collection of fantastic art from the start of a fantastic career.

Tony lives in Amherst, Massachusetts, with his wife and daughter.

Ares Games partners with Horrible Games to publish and distribute worldwide the English version of the storytelling game “Co-Mix”

June 10, 2015 – The Italian games publishers Ares Games and Horrible Games announce a partnership to release the storytelling game Co-Mix in a worldwide English language edition. Published by Horrible Games and released in 2014, Co-Mix had a limited English first edition printing and was available only in Europe. Thanks to this license agreement, Co-Mix is going to be reprinted by Ares Games and distributed in the USA and other English-speaking countries across the world.

In Co-Mix, players craft their stories by laying out several cards to create a full blown comic book page. Up to ten people can join in the fun, playing individually or in teams. Each player chooses the kind of story to tell – noir, horror, adventure, romance, and if it will be funny, scary, exciting, or moving. All players must create the story based on the same title – the best stories are voted by the other players.

The game features a rich and varied set of cards, representing different panels of a comic book. Cards are laid out to create a complete comic book page following the proposed title. Each card shows an inspirational illustration, with a varied set of characters, actions, and settings. When all comic pages are ready, each player or team tells their own story. Then, the stories are voted by the other players, using voting tokens to indicate which story they think is the most original, most exciting, or best composed.

Co-Mix is an imaginative and fun game, created by a talented designer and published by one of the most innovative boardgame companies on the market. We are glad to partner with Horrible Games to release this new version of Co-Mix. We think that this game fits our catalog very well, as it’s strongly thematic, fun, and easy to play; virtues we always want our games to have,” said Roberto Di Meglio, Director of R&D of Ares Games.

“Co-Mix was the first game published by Horrible Games, and I’m very happy of the good reception it had from both gamers and game developers. The only regret we had about it was that we couldn’t find a way to bring Co-Mix to the USA… until now! We are confident that the partnership with Ares Games will allow our game to achieve its full potential, in the country that helped establish the comics industry we all know and love, and all around the world,”  declared Lorenzo Silva, from Horrible Games.

Co-Mix was designed by Lorenzo Silva, with artwork by Matteo Cremona, coloring by Max Rambaldi, and graphic design by Antonio del Bono. The English edition by Ares Games is expected to release in October 2015. For more information, visit the Co-Mix page at Horrible Games website and the Ares Games website.

About Horrible Games

Horrible Games is an Italian Board Game Publisher. To make our games stand out from the crowd, we always experiment with new gameplay mechanics, or sometimes we apply an unexpected twist to old, well-proven ones, as we strive for originality and uniqueness. We also carefully craft a refined visual style, different for each game, to better convey the mood and feel we want the players to experience. We also tend to put a lot of silly, stupid things in our games, just because they make us laugh (and we hope some or our players will laugh, too). Horrible Games catalog includes Dungeon Fighter series, Steam Park and Co-Mix. To learn more, visit the website www.horrible-games.com and the Facebook page – www.facebook.com/HorribleGames.

While at Gen Con 2012 we visited with the WizKids  crew.  They were happy to pull out the Batman figs for us (and others around).  I like where the game seems to be going and with all of the super hero RPG’s. This set is going to be a great addition to the scene. Batman No Man’s Land is scheduled for a November release.

Let’s take a look at some of these guys.

Oh my!  It’s E.T.  I was shocked to see these guys.  I really don’t know more than what you see, but they are cool.

Redshirts is a fast paced screw-your-buddies style card game, with simple mechanics and a humorously irreverent take on a certain classic sci-fi television series. Everyone in the Galactic Space Corps knows that the most successful starship Captains go through junior enlisted crewmen like a fat kid goes through cupcakes. In Redshirts, you will: -Assemble and lead an away team of heroic yet disposable characters at a variety of locations. -Examine every mission in detail to determine the crewman with the very best chance to succeed, and then send someone else. -Turn your starship into a slaughterhouse as wave after wave of underlings rush to their death like a pack of lemmings with teleporter technology! Be the first to eliminate every Redshirt on your ship and demonstrate that you have what it takes to lead…from the rear!
