The Guys from Megacon Games share with me Mercs 2.0 Banner Saga and a sneak peek at the next Myth product.

I really like the new Mercs book.  Banner Saga looks awesome and the next Myth product is, I think, going to be a refreshing change.

Gen Con Countdown T-minus 8 Star Trek Panic

Jul 282016

With only eight days left I’m going to start sharing the games I’m looking forward to.  I doubt I will get to try them all with nearly thirty interviews scheduled at Gen COn 2016.  This list will be presented in no particular order, but I think, at times, you will be able to tell which ones I anticipate more.

st_p_web_bannerThe first game is Star Trek Panic. I have not yet played any of the panic games, even though I have wanted to; life is a nasty villian sometimes that gets in the way of gaming.  You might think that as a reviewer I play more games than the average individual.  I’m not entirely sure that is true, I think I get to play about as much as most gamers.  The difference is I almost always get to experience something new, which is cool most of the time.

Why Star Trek Panic? One it’s Star Trek and with the franchise turning 50 good things are happening.  This is just what I believe the first of many  will be. I’m a Star Trek fan. Plus, one of the mechanics reminds loosely of Star Fleet Battles, a game I used to play frequently.

Here is what I know

It is the fourth “panic” game.

You play in the Kirk era.

It comes with a cool 3d version of the Enterprise.

One of the key elements is recording damage doen to different sections of the ship.  This is the part that reminds me of Star fleet Battles.  It’s not nearly as tgactical but I really like the flavor it gives the game.

It is card driven and the cards are dependent on the number of players.

You can play the different characters, and they each have different special abilities reflectiung their personality and role from the Original series.

It’s a Co-operative game.

Without playing any of the panic I can’t say I have any reservations about Star Trek Panic.

munchMunchkin Cthulhu: Guest Artist Edition

Celebrate 15 years of Munchkin with special Guest Artist Editions!

Munchkins have hacked their way through dungeons, kung fu temples, starships, haunted houses, and super-foes. Now they face their greatest challenge: Cthulhu…and they’ve never looked cuter! Will they survive? Will they retain their sanity? Will they…level up? This Guest Artist Edition Munchkin Cthulhu adorably lampoons Lovecraft’s Mythos and the horror gaming that surrounds it.

Katie Cook has worked with Marvel, DC, Lord of the Rings, My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, and many others. Cook has previously illustrated Munchkin Love Shark Baby, Munchkin Kittens, and Munchkin Puppies. Cook also writes and illustrates a weekly webcomic: “gronk, a monster’s story.”

Secret Directive Kickstarter Preview

Oct 272015

Have you ever wanted to be a spymaster? Sending spys to other countries to collect intel, subvert enemy spies and probably die? Then you can send them to death rehab and do it all over again. That’s how it works right?

Secret Directive is a sort of “take-that” style deck building, economic, worker placement… thing for 2-4 players designed my Mike Lee and art by Daniel Giovannini. It wold be quite a task to wrestle all of those concepts into a workable and fun experience wouldn’t it? Well I guess we will find out. I will briefly describe the gist of the game, after which I will and tell you why I believe this game might or might not be worth your hard earned cash.

Okay so get this: There are four ways to win here. Four different types of “Intelligence” cards will allow you to advance 4 different tracks. Economy, Science, Military and Culture. Each provides a suitable and respectable upgrade to your country. You will research these cards, add them to your deck and advance these tracks.
