The latest of the Ultimate series books is packed with a ton of themed information. This is a gem for any espionage player or GM. Ultimate Intrigue features the Vigilante base class, new archetypes, feats, intrigue systems, social combat, new spells, and gear.

Vigilante base class has some pretty cool perks. The first and the coolest is the ability to have dual identities – like Batman! The class has the option for each identity to have a different alignment. My GM would have a lot of fun with that concept, and as a player it would be a great challenge to role-play. Beyond that you get to pick a path of specialization as an avenger or a stalker. An avenger gains an attack bonus equal to the character level, while a stalker capitalizes on stealth to gain 1d8 precision damage on flanked, flat-footed or otherwise unaware foes. This increases 1d8 every two levels. There are also several Vigilante talents. My favorite has to be Blind Spot. It allows the character to hide from creatures with special senses like Tremor Sense. That’s something I could have used in my last adventure.

There are of course several new archetypes in Ultimate Intrigue, and while many of them are specialized most can be used without too much difficulty. My favorite is the Guild Breaker, a Ranger who specializes in taking down an enemy organization. The difference is that the bonuses they get are applied to an enemy organization instead of to a favored enemy. This archetype also gets Deep Cover, which allows bonuses to Bluff and Disguise against the enemy organization.

The Role of Character

What does it mean to have character? If you are like most players you will start defining your path by picking your race and rolling some stats. Then you pick a class and maybe an alignment, and then you gear up for adventure. For many that’s all there is to creating a character, but for what I believe to be a much more exciting experience, personality needs to be bred into the character. I don’t mean a superficial background that is created by a few random rolls; I mean one that gives a certain amount of depth to one’s personality thus influencing thought patterns. Creating a character like that is a challenge that introduces ethical challenges that go beyond an alignment or dispositions established by a particular game system.

Blackclaw Games has recently released Space Conspiracy. Space Conspiracy is a role playing game in the science fictionspace genre with a large dose of quirky humor mixed in.

In the game, characters are created with a point buy system that players use to assign values to various attributes like Smarts, Muscles, and Attention Span. Players can also spend points on bonus traits such as “shiny” which grants the character shiny skin that helps reduce the damage taken from lasers. Players can get more points to spend by taking negative traits such as “doomed” which can result in the character being squished by a random asteroid. Dying in the game is almost assured, but the existence of clones allows characters to live on in different bodies, albeit sometimes with mutations.

Upon creation, each character knows about a randomly created conspiracy. The combined collection of conspiracies known by the party shapes the campaign universe. Within this universe characters will face challenges, wear living hats, and battle great horned fuzzwazzles with rocket launchers and ham sandwiches.

More information about Space Conspiracy can be found at www.spaceconspiracy.com. The book can be purchased at Amazon and a downloadable PDF is available at DriveThruRPG.

Mennara is a world of magic, mystery, and adventure. In the deep places beneath the earth lurk terrifying monsters and foul villains, conspiring to plunge the land into shadow. The darkest parts of the forests hide things better forgotten, and in the mountains gather hordes of savage creatures whose only ambition is bloodshed. And behind all that evil and all that malice lurks the Overlord, the hidden threat that seeks to work his dark design across the realm. Fortunately, Mennara is also a world of heroes. Heroes clever of mind, strong of sword arm, and stout of heart. Heroes in many shapes and sizes, unlikely heroes of many races and creeds and from many walks of life. Heroes like you…

Descent: Journeys in the Dark Second Edition is a narrative board game in which one player takes on the role of the treacherous overlord, and up to four other players take on the roles of courageous heroes. This updated version of the classic dungeon-delving board game features a host of enhancements, including new heroes and monsters, streamlined rules, a class-based hero system, and campaign play.

Roleplaying Etiquette for the Players

Articles about better playing, Gaming News  Comments Off on Roleplaying Etiquette for the Players

It has been a long time since I have role played.  I am getting ready to start a campaign in a system yet to be determined .  I am leaning towards Rifts or Ninjas and Superspies.  I haven’t played Rifts since 1998 and I am longing for a session.

Enough about what game system we will play.  The thought of playing has reminded me that sometimes things that shouldn’t need to be said must be said.   Huh?  hat in the world am I talking about?  Well, you’re a player what do you think?

Have you ever been sitting around a game table and caught a wiff of something that just doesn’t belong at the game table?  Have you ever been frustrated out of your mind because another just won’t stop talking?  Have you ever not wanted to play your character because one character in the part just makes you feel inferior?  If so you just might want to read this article.
