MONTREAL, September 1, 1939 (Roto-Reuters News Service, Earl Dixon reporting):

WPC.webcoverAmerican President-for-Life Hugh Johnson’s threats over securing unfettered access to the St. Lawrence River became deeds yesterday as troops of the American 1st and 27th Divisions lurched across the border into Canada. Elements of a United States Marine Corps brigade are reported to have landed at the small town of French Village, west of Halifax, and are advancing on the city.

Canadians were summoned to defend their homeland by the newly-appointed Defence Minister, John E. Mitchell.

“We will not permit these American scoundrels to pave our paradise and put up a parking lot,” Mitchell warned. “All true Canadians will rise to defend our unique culture and way of life in this, our country’s hour of need.” (Mitchell was shortly thereafter the subject of a Vote of Censure by the Legislative Assembly of Quebec for having failed to make his remarks in French.)

Meanwhile, all units of the Non-Permanent Active Militia in all Militia Districts have received mobilization orders, though transport and equipment are lacking. Volunteer battalions have spontaneously formed in Montreal and Halifax as university students, local police, townsmen and farmers band together to resist the invasion. And the majesty of the British Empire has begun to make itself felt: a battalion of British troops are reported to have arrived at Quebec City; even more encouraging are sightings of Royal Navy and American ships engaged in heavy exchanges of fire off Halifax.

WAR PLAN CRIMSON is a simulation game of a hypothetical invasion of Canada by the United States some time between 1935 and 1939. The game is for two players, one representing the leader of the armed forces of the United States that could be deployed against Canada (the US player) and the other representing the commander of the Canadian and British forces that would defend against a foreign invasion (the Commonwealth or CW player).

In reality, both countries have enjoyed cordial relations but it is also historical fact that the United States Army did make plans to invade Canada, in the context of the ‘Rainbow’ war plans where potential enemy countries were referenced by colours (Japan was orange, Britain red, and Canada crimson – whence the title of the game). In most cases these plans were created, studied and maintained in order to keep staff officers sharp, but the strategic priorities of an actual plan submitted for consideration in 1935 (seizing Halifax and Montreal in a quick campaign before Britain could intervene decisively) are the obvious ones and have been used as the basic framework for the action in this game.

Game components include:

– 176 tediously square die-cut counters
– a 17×22″ map, showing the environs of Montreal and Halifax at 3 miles per hex
– rules and charts, chock-full of procedural rhetoric
– a plastic bag to smother all of the above

Odin’s Ravens from Osprey Games is a race around the world.  It uses card to create an environment where outwitting your opponent may be the only way to win.  It takes seconds to learn and only minutes to play.

Would you believe the simplicity of this game is pretty complicated?  Well, the tactics that can be created certainly are, and you can out think yourself.

steamSteam Torpedo: First Contact

The First World War has lasted for ten years without any country taking the upper hand and no one can foresee how it shall end. Telin gas, an experimental weapon developed in secrecy, has been used by all armies, either to threaten or to punish and a dangerous game of cat and mouse has ensued.

On each continent, vast portions of territories have become toxic no man’s land. Whole provinces are isolated and states are divided. In many cases, neither men nor goods can travel by land anymore and sea control has become vital. In this context, each faction is developing a new generation of submarines in an effort to survive and dominate the seas.

In this war torn world, players must balance the need for oxygen, speed, and torpedoes while their crew does their best to defend against the enemy ship in Steam Torpedo: First Contact.

Before facing his opponent, each player builds his or her own submarine by selecting ten tiles to outfit the different compartments. Shielding, faster engine or firepower: each submarine will thus be unique, and players will need to develop their own strategy!

On the game board, each submarine is represented by a model indicating its position relative to the enemy (front, back or side) and distance (in contact or away). During the battle, players use their five crew members to enable the compartments of their submarine. Various effects can be triggered, in particular to inflict devastating damage to the enemy submarine. A player wins by destroying the control room of the opposing submarine or by eliminating all opposing crew members.

The Capo is getting old and about to retire. You think maybe it’s time for you to make your moves from behind the scenes, to put the gangsters into play that support your goals. Among the five families, power plays, backstabbing, whacks, and broken promises are just business as usual, it’s “nothing personal.” Will you gain the most respect among them all or end up at the bottom of the river, sleepin’ with da’ fishes?

In Nothing Personal, players control the five families of organized crime and use their influence over gangsters in the chain of command to work the mobsters they control up to the office of Capo. Players attempt to gain the most respect in five turns (five years) by amassing respect amongst the mafia through influence, negotiation, blackmail and bribery to move themselves  up the pyramid of mob power, or, if they fail, end up delivered to the Feds or worse.

Ninja Board Game Review

The ninja Board Game is a suspenseful and captivating experience every time.  I find an excellent balance between hidden (Ninja,Traitor, hand), revealed (events in game), and seen (Guards).   Basic objectives is to find the ninja and traitor accomplish your objectives and escape.  The cards are what you use to perform actions and duel.  The three create a pseudo-political tension that requires a certain degree of critical thought that isn’t found in many other games.  Ninja captures the tension  of being an assassin or a samurai in feudal Japan even though the game is set in the Legend of the Five Rings world.
