Love Letter from AEG review

I was introduced to Love Letter at Origins 2014, where it won an award for best family game. Honestly if it weren’t for Jason Hardy I wouldn’t have given the game a first look. I mean what kind of game has only 16 cards? Well Love Letter does, and it does it well.

Annette-317x600The object of the game is that each player is trying to have a love letter delivered to the princess who’s grieving the loss of the queen. The princess wants nothing to do with society and has locked herself in the tower.

At the start of the game each player has one card in hand. At the start of a player’s turn they draw a card and play one. When a card is played the written effect is triggered. At the end of the round the player with the highest card value is the winner of the round and receives a marker indicating a letter has been delivered to the princess. The game rounds continue until one player has a predetermined number of letters delivered. The number of letters is set by the number of players.

It doesn’t sound like much does it? It doesn’t take long for a player to realize that if they don’t count and use logic they’ll lose. Then it hits you to bluff and it really begins. The combination of bluffing and deduction keeps the players engaged the whole game. There is no waiting to do something because you’re too busy studying your opponents.

I really thought that Love Letter was going to be a loser, but it turns out to be a winner largely because you don’t play the game, you play the players.

I had the chance to grab a demo of Aline Frontiers from Gen Con 2014.   A game that I have wanted to look at for a long time.

I have to admit from articles I read about Alien Frontiers I expected it to have a much larger learning curve.  I found the game to be delightful.

One of the highlights of my Gen Con Experience was stopping by the GreenBrier Games booth and learning about Yashima.   The first part of this experience was meeting with Tony, the game developer.  We did an interview where he discusses the basic mechanics of the game

I fell in love with that description.

At Gen Con 2014 I had the chance to sit down with Sean Brown and chat about Spurs and Alien Uprising.  Spurs is a do it all kind of Western game.  While Alien Uprising is all about crashing on the wrong planet.  This interview was a lot of fun, a lot of wierd things happen during it that distract us.

You can learn more at MR. B Games.

6 Days and Counting to Gen Con

Well with only 6 days left I’m getting antsy. New announcements are rolling in everyday, ranging from new tournament software to the next new release. It is getting overwhelming, I’ve scheduled eighteen interviews, and I’m going to get some great games in their somewhere.

With that being said I’d like to share with you my thoughts on Munchkin! Steve Jackson Games will be there and they are releasing Munchkin Pathfinder deluxe. Munchkin is a great game that lends a role playing feel to a tabletop game. It brings spirit to the table that rings the tone of a drinking game with out drinking. Do you now what I mean? The suspense build up while the players concoct their scheme to win. Then the tension breaks and there is laughter and loud roars of joy that grow more deafening as the game goes on, drowning out the bar next door. At least that has been my experience, – fun exploding at every turn.

Beyond that I’m really looking forward to the Deluxe version of the game. It includes a board, standies and well great art.

I really don’t need to ramble on and on about Munchkin. It’s been around long enough that you should know. If not check it out.

Since that was so short I am really going to work my way into the Cryptozoic area and explore some of their games. They have done a lot in the last couple of years and I really need to catch up. I’m told that ROFL, The Hobbit, and the DC Comics Deck Building Game are all must haves. I’ll do my best to get you the skinny on that.
