Counting down to Gen Con T-4 Arena of the Planeswalker

planes_mdArena of the Planeswalker is one of those games that is kind a mystery.  There isn’t a lot of information on it but it’s made by Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast.   The fact that it’s mad by both companies kind of worries me, but I will give it a fair shot.   They did good things in my opinion with Heroscape and it looks this game will be using a lot of those mechanics.

Where are my concerns?

My first concern is that Hasbro won’t play nice.  That is if Hasbro asserts too much influence the Magic the Gathering Themed game might loos that magic feel and therefore it’s luster to gamers.

It may never have achieved that magic feel so it’s only a miniatures game made to look like Heroscape.

Magic the Gathering has a very large arsenal of mechanics, I hope they can break it down to a starter level.

I hope the mini’s look good.

It might just be the rebirth of Heroscape, which isn’t the direction I would like a Magic the Gathering Board game to go.

Why I want this.

Magic the Gathering has been a part of my life for years.  I have always desired cool figures and I hope that The Planeswalker Arena gives Magic the feel of  two mages dueling it out.   At this point I believe the two companies probably have a solid foundation to build on.

New Set to Release on July 17

Marks Pivotal Moment in Magic’s History and Lore

February 9, 2015RENTON, WA – Wizards of the Coast announced today Magic Origins, a new Magic: The Gathering set releasing this July. This pivotal new set reveals the origin stories of five of Magic‘s most beloved Planeswalker characters.

In the Magic: The Gathering Multiverse, some mages are born with a rare gift, simply known as “the spark.” When such mages face a great ordeal, their spark’s potential is unleashed, elevating them to become Planeswalkers and travel between the planes of the Multiverse. Magic Origins will reveal for the first time these pivotal moments for five Planeswalkers: Gideon Jura, Jace Beleren, Liliana Vess, Chandra Nalaar, and Nissa Revane.

Magic Origins is a different kind of core set than we’ve ever done before, one with ambitious story goals and deep creative impact,” says Doug Beyer, Magic‘s senior creative designer. “All core sets in recent years have had Planeswalker cards, but Magic Origins doesn’t just contain five Planeswalkers-it’s also about those Planeswalker characters. It’s about certain points in time in those Planeswalkers’ lives-the events that led them to become Planeswalkers-and is meant to set up a lot of our plans for Magic‘s future story. We’ll see these characters’ home worlds, learn about the joys and crises of their early lives, and discover how they became the Multiverse-traveling Planeswalkers we know today.”

This Planeswalker spark also exists in Magic‘s 20 million players and fans worldwide. For many fans, playing Magic has become a pivotal point in their own lives, as they forge life-long friendships in a welcoming and supportive community united by the fun of playing the world’s best strategy game. With face-to-face play events and social gatherings in more than 7,000 hobby game stores around the world, Magic invites you to ignite your own spark and join the ranks of the most passionate fans in gaming.

The Planeswalker Koth, from the metal plane of Mirrodin, sought help when his world darkened. He traveled to Dominaria to enlist allies and met fellow Planeswalker Venser. When Venser recognized the threat to Koth’s world was none other than Phyrexia, he knew that the only hope for Mirrodin was to find its maker. But that would mean forsaking its people in the meantime. Koth would rather die than turn his back on his fellow Mirrans. But Venser all but knew they would die anyway if they failed to reach Karn, his former mentor and creator of Mirrodin. Two Planeswalkers, one goal, very different methods. Recreate the struggle to lead the way to Mirrodin’s salvation.
