Interview with Jim Zub and the Pathfinder Comic Book Series

Gaming News, Paizo Publishing, Pathfinder  Comments Off on Interview with Jim Zub and the Pathfinder Comic Book Series
Jul 102012

Some of you already know that Paizio has teamed with Dynamite to create a Pathfinder comic book series.  The story is going to start with  3 heroes uncovering an evil plot that involves goblins.  More specifically it involves the unification of tribes.   I am guessing their quest is to uncover the madness behind the growing threat to Golaria. I don’t know about you but I am excited.

The creative mind behind the story telling is Jim Zub.   Jim has already had an extensive career, you can read his bio here. Lets not waste anymore time.

Through Gamer Goggles (TGG): I am curious about your operation.  Do you work alone?  That is do you do all of the art, fiction and editing?

Jim: Not all. I’m just the writer on the Pathfinder comic series. There are all kinds of other people involved in the development of this comic series. We have an art team (line art being done by Andrew Huerta , colors by Ross A. Campbell), an editorial team at Dynamite Entertainment (the comic publisher) and the team at Paizo (creators and publishers of the Pathfinder RPG). My job is to create a storyline for the comic series and to develop the back story and motivations for Pathfinder’s “iconic” characters, the core group that has been used to visually sell all of the Pathfinder RPG products but have never been fleshed out in terms of history or personality.  Continue reading »

Introduction

This is the first in a series of articles about “Character” Creation?  What do I mean by that?  (Especially the part with “Character” inside quotation marks.)  I mean, all the parts that are not covered in the basic mechanics of a particular RPG’s character creation system.  I mean the creation and development “universal” aspects of an RPG character – personality, attitude, behavior, motivation, psychology, etc.  I mean those parts that are at the heart of the “Role-Playing” experience (as opposed to the “roll-playing” experience). Press Release From Paizo

Top 16 Advance to Round 3 of RPG Superstar

Finalists to Design Original Monsters by End of Week

February 7, 2012 (REDMOND, Wash.) – Sixteen amateur game designers have advanced to Round 3 of Paizo Publishing’s RPG Superstar, the largest open-call tabletop roleplaying design contest in history. 2009 RPG Superstar champion Neil Spicer joined celebrity judges Clark Peterson, Ryan Dancey, and Sean K Reynolds to critique 32 original organizations designed by Round 1 finalists. In this round, fan votes determine who advances to Round 3, in which the Top 16 will design original monsters with full game statistics. All finalist submissions, complete with judge and reader commentary, are posted to the paizo.com messageboards.

“It’s always interesting to see how the competitors embrace each round’s challenge. Some play it conservatively, some appeal to a specific fanbase, and a few charge ahead to create something wild and innovative,” said judge and Paizo game developer Sean K Reynolds. “This year we had several traditional organizations like mercenary soldiers and seekers of lost knowledge, and unusual ones like a clan of succubus-geishas and a fleet of whale-riding pirates. As a judge, I’m always impressed with the creativity of the competitors—even the weird ones!”
The Top 16 finalists for RPG Superstar 2012 and their winning entries to date are:
Will Cooper (Auckland, New Zealand)
Ghostvision gloves, Stormsworn Company
Adam Donald (Toronto, Ontario)
Flask of Liquid Sunlight, The Red Bastards

The Top 16 will now be required to design Pathfinder Roleplaying Game statistics for an original monster concept and submit their complete monster write-up by 2:00 PM Pacific time on Friday, February 10. On February 14, Paizo will reveal judge comments on all 16 submissions to the general public, who will then get to discuss the entries and vote for their favorites. Voting ends on February 20, and the Top 8 (by votes) will move on to Round 4.
