German Ship To Play: SMS Wolve

Hey all,

Sigh…once again, have to start with an apology. The launch of Shadowrun, Fifth Edition has been an all consuming project that has sucked up most of Catalyst’s bandwidth and all of mine almost across the board. For those that don’t follow such things, the PDF & Print Preorders went on sale yesterday. Still a ton of SR-retaled stuff to do moving forward, of course, but SR monopilizing so much of my time is finally near an end.

Course, as an aside, the more fantastic Shadowrun does, the better it is for Leviathans as it gives us a better war chest to deal with the production issues still nagging at this game’s heels.

Nevertheless, I will be getting a swath of my time mostly back, which means more regular updates of various things, including getting PDF releases back on line.

As an apology for the dry spell of the last month or so, thought I’d give you the German SMS Wolveto play, along with the rules for the two new slots on this dangerous destroyer.

You can click here to download the PDF for this destroyer.

And the rules:

CHAFF SLOT

Whenever a Breach Roll for any type of aerial torpedo is made against a Location containing an undestroyed Chaff Slot is about to be made, the defending player first rolls 1DRed, adding in a die from any standard Crew Slot (i.e. Screening Crew, Bracketing Crew, and so on, cannot be used) that is undamaged and in that Location (even if there are multiple Crew Slots, only a single Crew Slot die is added).

On a result of 8-10 the torpedo is shot down, causing no further damage or effects; on a result of 7 or less the chaff does not shoot it down and a standard Breach Roll is now made by the attacker to determine if the torpedo strikes the target.

SCREENING CREW SLOT
A Crew Slot with a white diamond icon is known as a Screening Crew Slot.

A ship containing a Screening Crew Slot need only spend 1 MP to either Defensive or Offensive Screen (as opposed to the standard 3 MP).

***

To get a sense of the German vibe, feel free to field the Wolve with the HML Leviathans or HMLMedusa.

See ya next duty shift!

Crossfire: Why I like to play the Street Samurai: Simplicity with Versatility

Excerpt from Catalyst Game Labs

Shadowrun-5-Crossfire-Logo1

Sure the Street Samurai can deal a ton of damage—it’s one of the top damage dealing roles in the game. But the role also has many other tools it puts at your disposal.

So how do you deal damage as the Sammy? By playing Katanas with other weapon cards. A simple combo that’s fun to play. Katanas also stack with each other, so buy lots of them if they show up.

The problem is that your damage is all black and colorless and there are very few obstacles you can defeat with just that type of damage. This color-focus is the Street Samurai’s weakness, but you can do something about it and still stay in your color.

Dungeon Rolling into Gen Con

Demoing announced for game fair

(July 10th, 2013- Mountain Green, UT)
Tasty Minstrel Games announced that their wildly popular dice game Dungeon Roll will be demoed and debuted at GenCon 2013 in Indianapolis Indiana. The Kickstarter for Dungeon Roll raised over $250,000 with the most individual backers for a physical game on Kickstarter ever. Tasty Minstrel Games will be at Booth 459 so show up and learn how to play. At GenCon, if you buy Dungeon Roll, then you will get the first hero booster for free. GenCon is the largest game fair in North America with over 140K attendees regularly. There is a special first day of the show promotion where Dungeon Roll + Booster is $15 which is 25% off. This price will only be good Thursday August 15th.  Regular convention pricing after that day wil be $20.00.

The simplicity of the game combined with a player’s imagination is the winning formula.  In the words of Dungeon Roll’s designer, Chris Darden (who will be teaching the game at GenCon):

“Dungeon Roll began as a simple dice game. Where one pool of dice faced off against the other in an epic battle of… numbers, yawn. Elements of fantasy called to me, and the concept of Dungeon Roll was born.  The party dice became Fighters, Mages, Clerics and Thieves. And on the other side: Potions, Treasure Chests, Goblins, other nasty creatures, and of course.. Dragons. They would face off in an epic battle of heroes seeking fortune and glory!”

Hold the Line- Highland Charge ExpansionHold the Line: Highland Charge Expansion

$20.00 SRP

Hold the Line now looks at one of the most fabled conflicts in history, the Jacobite rebellions, in Highland Charge. These uprisings were, as of 2013, the last battles fought on British soil. Featured here are five battles from the fearsome contest: Sheriffmuir, Glen Shiel, Prestonpans, Falkirk, and Culloden. The game closely aligns with the Hold the Line system, but includes rules for Highland charges, Scottish militia, and of course the feared Highland clan units.

James II lost his throne in 1689, but he and his supporters did not give the fight to reclaim his rights and titles. >From 1689 to 1745 no less than four major Jacobite rebellions broke out in the Scottish highlands, often with limited aid from France and Spain. The battles were the last hurrah for a dying way of war. The Highlanders relied on assault tactics, in particular the feared Highland charge. The Loyalists, made up of British regulars and Scottish militia, used the linear tactics of the day, including volley fire, artillery barrages, and bayonets. For a time the Highlanders seemed to be tactically superior until the shattering defeat at Culloden, a battle that proved the ultimate superiority of musket and artillery fire over the claymore.

As the Jacobites can you reclaim the throne for the Stuart dynasty? As the Loyalists can you protect the Hanoverian succession and deal a final death blow to absolutism in Britain? Across the way the bagpipes can be heard. The clans have mustered, the sound of cannon deafens, men shout commands, smoke fills the air. You must Hold the Line!
