Gen Con Announces Sustainability Initiatives for 2018 Convention

Event to Support “It’s My City” Campaign with New Efforts

FOR RELEASE – April 18, 2018

INDIANAPOLIS (April 18, 2018) Gen Con, the largest and longest-running gaming convention in North America, has announced a multi-year sustainability campaign that will feature several 2018 components, including the reduction of millions of pages of paper and paper waste, upcycling single-year signage into collector’s items, new “unboxing stations” for the recycling of game packaging, testing of digital ticketing, and support for food rescue efforts. This on-going sustainability initiative supports Indianapolis’ “It’s My City” campaign and the company hopes to provide a template for sustainability initiatives for other conventions and events as well.

“Just as Indianapolis loves welcoming Gen Con to our city each year, Gen Con has shown their commitment to Indianapolis – working to lessen their environmental impact and actively participate in the betterment of our community,” said Mayor Joe Hogsett. “This year, as Gen Con proclaims ‘It’s My City,’ I encourage all local organizations to take ownership of the place we call home, and join in our efforts to create a cleaner, greener, and more beautiful Indianapolis.”

Gen Con Names Indianapolis Public Library as Literacy Partner

Convention to Host Bookmobile, Promote Literacy in Indy Libraries

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INDIANAPOLIS (April 13, 2018) Gen Con, the largest and longest running gaming and hobby convention in North America, has named The Indianapolis Public Library Foundation as its Literacy Partner for the August 2-5, 2018 convention. As part of this agreement, Gen Con will supply the Library Foundation with more than 100 convention badges to support youth literacy, summer reading programs, and summer costume contests that take place in Indy libraries. Gen Con also will have a presence for the Library Foundation in the Indiana Convention Center during the event, and will host a bookmobile on-site on Sunday, August 5.

“We are grateful Gen Con has named us as their literacy partner,” said Roberta Jaggers, president of the Library Foundation. “The Library Foundation supports many of The Indianapolis Public Library’s literacy initiatives because we believe in the power of reading to transform lives. Both reading and playing games are immersive experiences that open doors to new worlds. Reading and gaming go hand-in-hand.”

Those interested in participating in library programming and learning more about the badge giveaways should go to the Library Foundations social media pages on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/IndyPLFndtn/ and Twitter @IndyPL_Fndtn to learn more. Participation with the bookmobile on Sunday, August 5 will not require a Gen Con 2018 badge, and any local residents are encouraged to attend.

“The Indianapolis Public Library Foundation provides a tremendous resource and bedrock for the Indy community,” said Jake Theis, Director of Marketing for Gen Con. “The relationship between gaming, literacy, and learning is strong, and we’re delighted to help the library’s efforts in any way possible.”

Gen Con 2018 will return to the Indiana Convention Center Thursday, August 2 through Sunday, August 5 in Indianapolis. Last year marked an historic milestone when the convention celebrated its 50th show, setting record attendance numbers and selling out for the first time in its history. Gen Con expects to sell out of attendee badges prior to the convention this year as well.

Second Helpings and The Jack Vasel Memorial Fund Selected

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INDIANAPOLIS (March 16, 2018) Gen Con, the longest running game convention in North America, has chosen Second Helpings and The Jack Vasel Memorial Fund as its Official Charity Partners for 2018. In the past, the convention officially collaborated with one philanthropic organization each year. As part of this agreement, both organizations will receive the 2018 proceeds from Gen Con’s longstanding charity events, including an auction, a balloon sculpture, and the popular “Cardhalla,” a giant destruction of card structures.

“By featuring both of these deserving groups we hope to bring awareness to charities in both the Indianapolis and greater gaming communities,” said David Hoppe, president of Gen Con. “The generosity of Gen Con attendees has made a huge difference for charity partners in the past and we’re looking forward to supporting Second Helpings and The Jack Vasel Memorial Fund in reaching their fundraising goals.”

Gen Con, which celebrated its 50th convention in 2017, has taken place in Indianapolis since 2003. During its time in Indy Gen Con has raised more than $260,000 for local charity partners.

“As Second Helpings celebrates our 20th anniversary we are delighted to partner with Gen Con as an Official Charity Partner,” said Katie Prine, senior director of philanthropy at Second Helpings. “Like Gen Con, we recognize the power in bringing a community together around a passion. Whether you are interested in hunger relief, fighting food waste, or eliminating poverty through culinary job training, we are working on all three. Second Helpings staff and volunteers are excited to welcome Gen Con 2018 attendees to Indianapolis this August, and we extend our gratitude to all attendees for joining the fight against hunger in Central Indiana.”

Last year, approximately 60,000 people attended (turnstile attendance reached 207,979) Gen Con 50, and participated in over 19,000 ticketed events. The convention sold out for the first time in its 50-year history and is expecting to sell out again.

“The Jack Vasel Memorial Fund is thrilled to be this year’s Gen Con charity partner,” said John Kaufeld, board member of The Jack Vasel Memorial Fund. “It’s an honor to have our work celebrated by the people we serve.”

Gen Con will return to Indianapolis on August 2 – 5. Badges are still available and can be purchased at gencon.com

Feb 192018

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INDIANAPOLIS (February 16, 2018) Gen Con, the largest and longest running tabletop gaming convention in North America, is reporting a 6% year-over-year increase in its attendee badge sales to date, and as a result, expects its second consecutive year of selling out of attendee badges. Convention badge sales, which opened on January 14, 2018, have reached record numbers and the convention again plans to cease badge sales in the early summer if sales trends continue. Last year’s convention sold out of 4-Day attendee badges in early July and all single-day badges the week prior to the show, marking the first year the convention sold out of those badge types. Initial 2018 sales are trending towards a sell-out of all attendee badge types in July 2018.

“Following a historic Gen Con 50, many wondered how attendees would respond to the 2018 show,” said David Hoppe, President of Gen Con. “We’re happy to report that this year’s interest has surpassed last year’s record numbers. With additional organizational effort, we expect to support even more attendees while still preserving a world-class attendee experience. With the combined passion of our fans and the foresight and cooperation of our partners in Indianapolis, we’re eager to continue our convention’s growth in Indy.”
Gen Con LLC has announced an agreement with the city of Indianapolis to extend its commitment through 2022. Gen Con will return to Indy on August 2-5 in 2018, August 1-4 in 2019, July 30-August 2 in 2020, August 5-8 in 2021, and August 4-7 in 2022.
For the second consecutive year, Gen Con will offer programming on the field level and in the exhibit halls of Lucas Oil Stadium, as well as throughout the Indiana Convention Center, at an outdoor presence on Georgia and South Streets, and through hundreds of ticketed events at numerous hotels.
The convention’s exhibit hall will feature more than 500 exhibiting companies and Gen Con expects to host more than 15,000 ticketed events in 2018. According to last year’s estimates by Visit Indy, Gen Con has an annual economic impact in excess of $70 million to the local Indianapolis economy.

Hot Box Pizza Review

While At Gen Con 50, I had the chance to experience Hot Box Pizza, the makers of the Official Gen Con Pizza, and I have to let you know about it. When I first decided to try their pizza, I was in my hotel room and failed because I didn’t realize the pizza was only offered at the downtown location and on Georgia Street. So the next day I tried to get to the downtown location, but I just didn’t have enough time between interviews. On day three, I decided I would grab it on Georgia Street amidst the hustle and bustle of the food trucks.

Harry & Izzy’s Restaurant Review – Gen Con 50

I had the pleasure of sitting down for lunch at Harry and Izzy’s for lunch the first day of Gen Con 50.  This wasn’t my first visit, my prior visit was in 2010 I believe, and is one of my favorite dining experiences ever. The time I spent there with my wife, Lisa, has made me want to return ever since. Sadly, I ate alone on this adventure.

It was no surprise that I was greeted cheerfully and quickly.  The hostess sat me in the back, away from the street. It was nice and could easily have been romantic if it had been a date. The server greeted me promptly, but she seemed a little nervous – it turned out I was her first customer out of training. She was a blast, but asked to keep her name out of the review. She took care of my order, just as expected, and then we had a great conversation about Gen Con before my meal came.
