Alignment is one of those weird game mechanics that can be viewed as both a hindrance and an aid. Because of this it is often the victim of a love hate type of relationship among players that can cause some heated disagreements. If they could apply their thoughts to its use they would not have so many words in lost to indifference.

When I speak of alignment in this article I’m not referring to any one system or style. I’m instead writing about the concept of what it can be in the development of character. If you apply such a system to developing the personality of your individual I believe it can be invaluable. Many of us walk through our lives with no “moral” code, at least not the way an alignment is is presented in game terms. That’s because games have a difficult time presenting alignment in an effective way. Since many alignments are presented as a code that creates a struggle of some sort, usually good and evil, they have to be broad so players can use them effectively with their creations. Not to mention many characters are created with to be adults ready to start their adventuring career. In reality this couldn’t be farther from the truth. In the real world we develop our “alignment” over years of character growth. For us our alignment is directly linked to what we believe, or to be more accurate, what we have come to believe. That is our faith directs our choices. This could mean you are guided by religion, science, or philosophy. It doesn’t matter what guides your thoughts what matters is that when you apply this to your character she has already lost years of development.

IHMIn Her Majesty’s Name is a miniatures war game that is set in a steam pink setting of 1895. Small bands of of figures are assembled to fight over the objectives you establish. This is a skirmish game where you will generally field not more than ten models per player. Written by by Craig Cartmell and Charles Murton the book totals 64 pages costs about 15.00 and is also available as a pdf. If you know of any book published by Osprey publishing you already know the quality you’re getting.

This Skirmish game can be bloody quick. I’ve had games last as little as 15 minutes or as long as an hour. Play is pretty smooth, it uses an alternate activation system where models take turns following the model play of move and shoot.

7Seven7s

$11.99

The magic number 7 holds meanings, powers and coincidences dating back to the dawn of time. In Seven7s you have the powers of 7 of the most famous 7s in history. Use these powers carefully to defeat your opponents.

Each player has a hand of 3 cards throughout the game. Each turn players will play 1 card to the 7 columns and then redraw to 3 cards at the end of their turn.

When one of the 7 columns is full of 7 cards the game ends and the player holding the most points wins.

Through thoughtful card play wielding the powers of 7, players vie to strengthen their hands while diminishing the hands of their opponents. Perhaps 7’s and 6’s are reduced to no value through the Ages of Man; or, all Indigo cards are now valued at 7 because of the Colors of the Rainbow power. Maybe you are forced to discard your most valuable card by the 7 Deadly Sins or your opponent’s appeal to the Lucky Gods garners him some bonus victory points.

Play is quick with lots of surprises. Do you have what it takes to harness the powers of the Seven7s or has your luck run out?

Machine of Death: The Game of Creative Assassination From Game Salute

missionMachine of Death: The Game of Creative Assassination

$40.00

Machine of Death: The Game of Creative Assassination is a storytelling game set in a world in which a machine can predict how a person will die with 100% accuracy with only a small blood sample. However, the machine delights in being vague and twisted. A card reading “Old Age” could mean you die in your sleep at age 120, or it could mean you’re run over tomorrow by an elderly driver who forgot to take his pills today.

Players of the game take the role of assassins, who must use the various tools at their disposal; from storytelling to a slew of items available from specialty Black Market shops to create a situation in which a target is killed in a way in line with their Death Prediction. The Machine of Death Game uses this basic idea of assassins working in a world where cause of death is known to create various game modes.

There are various game modes such as general Round Robin, Head-To-Head, Co-op, Cutthroat and The Day Off which allow for tons of replayability and fun! So get your catapult ready to fling some sharks at people or maybe create a quick sand generator in a treehouse to take out your rivals. With all these possibilities and game play, assassination has never been more fun!

King NYKing of New York

$49.99 SRP

There’s always something happening in the city that never sleeps. Maybe it’s the lights, maybe it’s the energy, or maybe it’s the giant monsters trying to demolish the place!

King of New York is a standalone game from designer Richard Garfield that keeps the core ideas of King of Tokyo while introducing new ways to play. As in King of Tokyo, your goal is to be the first monster to collect 20 victory points (VPs) or to be the last monster standing. On your turn, you roll six dice up to three times, then carry out the actions on those dice. Claws cause damage to other monsters, hearts heal damage to yourself, and energy is stored up so that you can purchase power cards that provide unique effects not available to anyone else.
