Today we look at Lands and Artifacts. I won’t be discussing the new lands, because they are all good. I will primarily focus on artifacts. Most of the artifacts and multicolored cards. No, playing around onto the cards.Manor Gargoyle 5
Artifact Creature – Gargoyle Rare
Defender
Manor Gargoyle is indestructible as long as it has defender.
1: Until end of turn, Manor Gargoyle loses defender and gains flying.
Illus. Matt Stewart #228/264 4/4
Manor Gargoyle may not ever see constructed, but he is a house in limited. He is a threat that is not easily dealt with in limited.
Runechanter’s Pike 2
Artifact – Equipment Rare
Equipped creature has first strike and gets +X/+0 where X is the number of instant and sorcery cards in your graveyard.
Equip 2
Illus. John Avon #231/264
I believe it is an early pick in limited. It might have a place in a goblin deck.
Geist of Saint Traft 1wu
Legendary Creature – Spirit Cleric Mythic Rare
Hexproof
Whenever Geist of Saint Traft attacks, put a 4/4 white Angel creature token with flying onto the battlefield tapped and attacking. Exile that token at the end of combat
Illus. Igor Kieryluk #213/264 2/2
This guy is really just pretty good if you have a way to protect him. On the downside he is pretty easy to deal with even though he has hexproof. Ad an Angelic Destiny to the picture though and he gains new potential.
Blazing Torch 1
Artifact – Equipment Common
Equipped creature can’t be blocked by Vampires or Zombies.
Equipped creature has “{T}, Sacrifice Blazing Torch: Blazing Torch deals 2 damage to target creature or player.”
Equip 1
#216/264
I saw this card and was wow “how good is this in limited?” It is a solid pick in draft, and you should be playing it in your sealed deck.
Wooden Stake 2
Artifact – Equipment Common
Equipped creature gets +1/+0.
Whenever equipped creature blocks or becomes blocked by a Vampire, destroy that creature. It can’t be regenerated.
Equip 1
Illus. David Palumbo #237/264
Wooden stake is pretty good in limited. It might make sideboards in Standard if vampires stay around or transform into something new. But with the loss of BloodGhast and his friends I am not sure that will happen.
Looking back again at the Innistrad expansion, we can see that Wizards of the Coast has given a a lot of themes (Vampires, Werewolves, Horrors, and more). They did a good job reflecting a Gothic horror them without compromising the integrity of the game. Further tey have created a setan expansion block that really looks like a lot of fun to draft.
Next week I will start talking about the facelift on Standard.
