13_Star_Trek_Rulebook_CoverWell it’s no surprise to me that Gale Force 9 landed this liscense.  I first caught wind of Ascendency when I stumbled across a A Beasts of War interview. Intrigued I watched it.  I learned so much I really cant wait.  This game is truly unique and it sounds like they captured the scalability of space.  Say what?! Aside from that there are some really cool features that, I feel, are going to truly reflect the politics or diplomacy Star Trek strives to display.

Ascendency will allow each player to play a race.  From what I understand yiou can only play the races that are not the iconic threats to the universe – like The Borg.  Each race willnset out from their home world and explore the galaxy.  Along the way they will encounter new civilizations, other races, and scientific phenomena.

Players can settle/conquer planets to gain what I will call for now resources in order to grow their fleet. I’m not sure how a winner is picked yet, but one other important factor is that you build the board.  A large board with a few players might mean there is several turns before player interaction. While a smaller board will be a quicker game.  What I thinkk makes the board so neat, is that it can easily be used to play with a multitiude of people at conventions.  Which again touches on the Star Trek theme, meeting new races which in this case it’s the players from different cultures.

Did I mention they have the rulebook available for FREE!

I also learned that the planets are color coded.  The colors will have different effects for different races.  The Beast of War interview said that Klingons might prefer red planets because of their war like nature. .

New_Space_Lane_and_SystemThe last cool thing about ascendency is that the nemesis races (The Borg and Cardassians) are going to be like a playable piece.  What, that is just wild.  My question is “Can all of you loose the game to The Borg?”

This game sounds totally stellar and it’s on my must do list.  If not by me then by a very close friend!

Assault Carriers are monumental symbols of Covenant power, and among the deadliest implements wielded by the Prophets in their war against humanity. Each Assault Carrier is a potent instrument of conversion and compliance, capable of deploying thousands of troops and numerous fighter craft, backed by an array of devastating energy projectors that can burn entire continents to ash: a single CAS is sufficient to quell all but the most pernicious heresy, rebellion, or parasite outbreak. Colossally expensive to construct and few in number, the rare loss of an Assault Carrier is mourned by the entire Covenant.
Every major Covenant fleet has at least one Assault Carrier at its heart, if only because carriers themselves require a significant number of support vessels when operating away from High Charity or major outposts. Multiple carriers in a single fleet is unusual, but not unheard of. For example, the crusading Fleet of Sacred Consecration, commanded by the Prophet of Regret himself, is led by twin Assault Carriers, the Solemn Penance and Day of Jubilation. Together, these massive warships have scoured dozens of human worlds and bring righteous destruction to those within the Covenant who dare stand in the way of the Prophet’s holy mission.
Contains: 1 resin Assault Carrier, 1 Medium/Small Sprue, 1 custom Formation Base, 1 Formation Sprue, 4 Covenant Token Sheets, 1 bag of 10 Halo Dice, 2 Statistics Sheets and A5 Formation Overlay Sheets. Model supplied unpainted and unassembled.

The Punic and its sister ships were the first of a new breed of warships drafted to fight a new style of colonial war in the waning years of the 25th century. Officially designated Space Control Vehicles, these massive carriers could transport and sustain entire Colonial Military Authority (CMA) expeditionary and interdiction campaigns in the remote Outer Colonies for months at a time, crushing dissent and terrorism before it could fester and spread. At least, that was the intent before Covenant fleets threatened humanity with extinction.
Punic-class supercarriers have served the UNSC well in numerous campaigns and holding actions during the Covenant War, including the heroic last stand above Estuary and as base stations for the decisive counterinsurgency and evacuation operations on Charybdis IX. Unfortunately, the destruction of each supercarrier also means an irreplaceable loss of elite crews and materiel that slowly erodes the UNSC Navy’s overall effectiveness. By 2552 only a handful of Punics’ remain spaceworthy, including the Trafalgar, pride of Reach’s defense fleet.

Readers,

I suppose at the end of the day, tabletop board games are a form of entertainment. They allow us to exercise our minds. They make us smarter and more creative. They allow us to build cities and nations, participate in a revolution or explore the vastness of time and space. They even allow us to lie and cheat and win in grand moments of theater while your friends sit there in awe of your apparently new-found ability to bluff. It’s amazing what a few cards, some cardboard and a few plastic bits can achieve. That is what I love about games. The level of pure, unadulterated, personal interaction and immersion that is possible to achieve through games with relatively simple rules, beautiful artwork and clever mechanics is nowhere to be found in any other form of entertainment. So yes, at the end of the day, tabletop games are simply a form of entertainment, but I can not imagine a better form it could take.

I should introduce myself. My name is Andy and I am very excited to be part of Through Gamer Goggles as board game reviewer. I hope to do as much justice to gamer-goggles.com and the games that I review as I possibly can. I have a many obsessions in my life. This should allow me to effectively vent two of them; board games and writing. I truly hope you guys will enjoy my articles and if you do, you can look forward to hearing from me a lot more often in the future in both written and video form. Please look forward to my first review coming up very soon. The GenCon pre-release
One Night Revolution by Indie Boards and Cards. Thanks guys, and go out there and play some games!

CLASSIC ROLEPLAYING GAME TORG RETURNS AS TORG ETERNITY

Ulisses Spiele Announces Return of Torg in New Updated Edition

CHANDLER, AZ (July 21, 2015) – Ulisses Spiele US, a division of Germany’s premiere game manufacturer and distributor, today announced the return of the influential Torg roleplaying game.

The new game is entitled Torg: Eternity, and is a new and updated take on the original game and its setting. The design team includes many who worked on the original Torg line that debuted from West End Games in 1990.

Torg co-creator Greg Gorden has been involved at a high level and given it his blessing: “I really like this re-imagining of the TORG mythos. The streamlining and modernization of the game mechanics feel spot on. I cannot wait to play this game!”

The game’s rights were sold after the closure of West End Games and were eventually purchased by Torg fan and president of Ulisses Spiele, Markus Plotz. “TORG is a one of a kind RPG. The setting is unique and for over 15 years, I dreamed about releasing a new and updated version. Now, with the help of the amazing Shane Hensley, that dream finally becomes reality!”

Shane Lacy Hensley heads up the United States studio where both Torg: Eternity and The Dark Eye are being created. “Though my plate is pretty full with my own company, Pinnacle Entertainment Group, I couldn’t resist working on the game that gave me my start. I also met a kindred spirit in Markus Plotz who truly loves and appreciates what a turning point Torg marked in RPG development, so I just couldn’t say no.”

Torg: Eternity will debut in 2016 in deluxe, full color hardback format.
