Paizo Publishing Launches Largest Open-Call for Amateur Game Designers

 

REDMOND, WA (December 10, 2013): Paizo Publishing, LLC, publisher of the world’s best-selling Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, as well as novels, game accessories, and board games, announces today the kick-off of the 2014 RPG Superstar game designer contest.

 

Going on its 7th year, RPG Superstar is Paizo’s annual competition to find the best and brightest unknown game designers, and give them the opportunity to have their work critiqued by industry veterans, game design rockstars, and the fan community.

Entries are reviewed and critiqued by industry veterans, game design rockstars, and the Pathfinder community. The RPG Superstar contest is hosted by Paizo Designer Sean K. Reynolds, This year’s panel includes:

The winner of the competition will have their adventure published by Paizo as a Pathfinder Module, a full-color, 64-page, high-quality softcover book, compatible with not only the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game (RPG), but also with any game published under the Open Gaming License (OGL). Also, three runners-up will win assignments to write Pathfinder Society scenarios, offering all four finalists professional writing contracts with Paizo Publishing, and an opportunity to begin their game design careers by working on the world’s best-selling roleplaying game.

 

In last year’s contest, more than half a million votes were cast by Pathfinder fans, resulting in winner Steven Helt, whose Pathfinder Module, Tears at Bitter Manor, is due out January 2014.

Among those confirmed are:

Ben Wootten: Wootten is an artist/designer who has worked on the Lord of the Rings trilogy, closely involved in designing the Balrog and Strider’s sword. He also worked on the film The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Wootten’s Pathfinder work includes Pathfinder Player Companion interior illustrations, as well as covers and Bestiary monster art. His work on the original Pathfinder RPG Bestiary defined the look of dragons in the Pathfinder world.

Jim Zub: Jim Zub is a writer, artist and art instructor based in Toronto, Canada. He juggles his time between being a freelance comic writer, Project Manager for UDON Entertainment and Program Coordinator for Seneca College‘s award-winning Animation program. His current projects include Makeshift Miracle, a modern day fable, Skullkickers, a sword & sorcery action-comedy, and Pathfinder, the comic series based on the best-selling tabletop RPG.

Tim Hitchcock: In 2002, Hitchcock began submitting articles and adventures regularly for both Dungeon and Dragon magazines. He has since freelanced for many RPG companies, and written and contributed to dozens of articles, adventures and sourcebooks. Notable Paizo works include “Stolen Land” (Kingmaker #1), “Broken Moon” (Carrion Crown #3), and “The Price of Infamy” (Skull & Shackles #5).

Greg A. Vaughn: Greg A. Vaughan cut his professional adventure-design teeth writing in Dungeon with his first adventure, “Tammeraut’s Fate”. Since then he has continued to write for Paizo and the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game as well as Wizards of the Coast, Green Ronin, and Legendary Games and created Frog God Games with Bill Webb of Necromancer Games fame. He is a member of the WereCabbages freelance writers’ guild.

Neil Spicer: Through hard work and no small amount of luck, Neil Spicer successfully navigated the challenges of RPG Superstar 2009 to take the ultimate prize, winning an opportunity to pen the Pathfinder module, Realm of the Fellnight Queen. Since then, he’s gone on to write for a number of Pathfinder Adventure Paths, including Kingmaker, Serpent’s Skull, Carrion Crown, Jade Regent, Skull & Shackles, Reign of Winter, and the soon-to-be released Wrath of the Righteous.

These guests are in addition to the local gaming industry celebs expected to be in attendance, including James Ernest, Wolfgang Baur, Bill Webb, Ryan Dancey, and local artists Raven Mimura, Craig J. Spearing, and Tyler Jacobson, among them.

 

Paizo Con will take place July 5 – 7, 2013 at the Seattle Airport Marriott. Studio Announces Sneak Peek Online Environment Experience and Pit Fight Battles Preview

Unity Engine Enables Highly Anticipated Mac OSX Version of the Game

 

REDMOND, WA (January 9, 2012): Goblinworks, Inc. is thrilled to announce today a licensing agreement with Unity Technologies that secures Unity as the engine behind the massively multiplayer online roleplaying game (MMORPG) Pathfinder Online.

To celebrate the partnership with Unity, Goblinworks today launches a demo Environment Experience of the first level of Pathfinder Online’s Thornkeep dungeon, which lets players view the environment originally constructed for the Technology Demo, now run through the Unity Engine. The demo is viewable through a Unity web app in your browser at https://goblinworks.com/experience.html.

“We have been evaluating solutions in this space for more than a year,” says Ryan Dancey, CEO of Goblinworks. “For performance, code quality, reliability and flexibility, Unity rose to the top of our list. Goblinworks also announces the first playable test-environment, a version of Pathfinder Online’s combat-testing software called Pit Fight, which will be available to players in Fall of 2013. Through Pit Fight, players will help the development team cull a wide range of combat data while getting a preview of combat in Pathfinder Online. Pit Fight will be a stand-alone, single-player experience.

Pit Fight will put the player through a number of gladiatorial battles, fought in the Bonepit Arena in Thornkeep, under the watchful eyes of the Hellknights. Players will be able to get a sneak preview of the Pathfinder Online combat design, and will help to shape its development through PVE conflict against various NPC opponents.

Initially, players will be using a limited number of prebuilt characters and specific scenarios but expanding over time to include other classes, customization and combat styles. Players will be able to test which aspects of combat they most enjoy, and plan their advancement path once Pathfinder Online launches.

The Emerald Spire Superdungeon is currently only available through the Pathfinder Online Kickstarter rewards. When the Kickstarter reaches its $1 million funding goal, the Emerald Spire Superdungeon will encompass 12 dungeon levels in 128 pages, accompanied by 6 double-sided Flip-Mats in the Emerald Spire Dungeons Flip-Mat Multi-Pack. They will be available in PDF format as part of the rewards at and above the $75 “Loremaster” backer level, and in print format as part of the new RPG Print Pack add-on ($100.00). A PDF of Emerald Spire can also be had at the $15 pledge level.
