ARTIST GUEST OF HONOR at GEN CON

Road to Gen Con 2015  Comments Off on ARTIST GUEST OF HONOR at GEN CON
Jul 222015

diNew York Times bestselling author/illustrator TONY DITERLIZZI is this year’s ARTIST GUEST OF HONOR at GEN CON.  Tony will be promoting his new book REALMS: THE ROLEPLAYING GAME ART OF TONY DITERLIZZI (Dark Horse Books).  Here are Tony’s thoughts about GenCon, where he launched his worldwide bestselling THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES (co-created with Holly Black) in 2003.  http://diterlizzi.com/home/gen-con-artist-guest-of-honor/

And here is a snippet from Guillermo Del Toro’s foreword for REALMS:

“Tony’s work has a distinct flair, a love for monsters if you will.   His creatures have the charm of Henson or Rackham but they carry with them hints of their own ecosystem.  He stands alone as a creator of worlds and a weaver of tales.  May you treasure these art pieces as much as I do.”  – Guillermo del Toro  (Director of PAN’S LABYRINTH, HELLBOY and PACIFIC RIM).

It’s of interest that Tony got his start doing game art for D&D and is now one of the most renowned children’s authors in the world…there must be a parallel to be explored there…I think the commonality resides in the ability to “world-build.”

Artist Guest of Honor

Gen Con is thrilled to announce the 2015 Artist Guest of Honor Tony DiTerlizzi.

Tony will host several events at the show, make sure to check them out when Event Registration opens in May. When not hosting his events, you can find Tony at his booth in the Art Show. Stop by and say “hi!”

About Tony:

DRAGONS, SPACE MONSTERS, GOBLINS, and insects—the characters that inhabit Tony DiTerlizzi’s world haven’t changed since he was a kid growing up in Florida.

In 1981, after watching The Dark Crystal and playing Dungeons & Dragons, 12-year-old Tony created a field guide on fantastical creatures. He would return to this premise many years later as the genesis for the multi-million bestselling chapter book series, The Spiderwick Chronicles.

Eleven years later, Tony began working for TSR where his art soon became synonymous with the Planescape RPG. Throughout the decade he also freelanced with White Wolf Games and Wizards of the Coast, where he painted cards for Magic: The Gathering.

This year marks the release of Realms: The Roleplaying Game Art of Tony DiTerlizzi (published by Dark Horse Books) – a first-ever collection of fantastic art from the start of a fantastic career.

Tony lives in Amherst, Massachusetts, with his wife and daughter.

Slew of Activities includes All-Star Cthulhu Summit with Live Séance for the Ghost of H.P. Lovecraft, Cthulhu Costumed Character, Prizes and More!

CHICAGO, IL (July 22, 2015): Last year, Team Warpo attended Gen Con having just completed their successful Kickstarter to create the retro action figure line, Legends of Cthulhu, which has now become truly legendary. This year, Warpo returns to Gen Con as a proud recipient of Gen Con’s Marketing Fellowship, with a booth filled with Cthulhu activities and the critically acclaimed Legends of Cthulhu action figures, and as host of the epic Cthulhu All-Stars Summit, which will culminate in a live séance for the ghost of H.P. Lovecraft.

Warpo, along with co-sponsor Paizo, has assembled some of the industry’s leading Cth-experts to host the first Cthulhu All-Stars Summit, taking place Saturday at Noon in Paizo seminar room #233. Join moderators Paizo creative director James Jacobs and Warpo president Bryan Katzel, along with Sandy Petersen, Kenneth Hite, and occult expert Brandon Hodge, as they discuss the impact of H.P. Lovecraft’s stories and characters on popular culture and their work. The panel will hold some fantastic surprises, prizes, and will culminate with a live séance conducted by Brandon Hodge to entice Lovecraft himself to join the festivities.

Gen Con attendees will want to visit the Warpo booth (#2939 in the Exhibit Hall), where they will be greeted by the mighty Cthulhu himself, get their picture taken in front of the giant photo wall than puts them inside their own action figure packaging, and collect all four free daily Legends of Cthulhu buttons. Gen Con fans will also get their first look at the new 12” Cthulhu Standard Edition, 12” Cthulhu Glow in the Dark Edition, and the Legends of Cthulhu Collector Club Kit, all of which will be on display in the Warpo booth, and the full line of Legends of Cthulhu 3.75” action figures and select Kickstarter premiums, such as the LoC coloring book and posters, will be available for purchase.

Warpo’s costumed Cthulhu will be making his way around Gen Con, as well as hanging out in the Warpo booth, providing an opportunity for fans to take and post a pic to social media, with the hashtag #CthulhuIsComing. One lucky winner will be chosen from the social media feeds each day to win one of the Signature Series Legends of Cthulhu figures, and in the final drawing on Saturday, a chance to win the one-of-a-kind 12” Cthulhu Glow in the Dark Edition prototype. Winner must be present at the Warpo booth at the time of the drawing.

Gen Con, North America’s largest hobby gaming convention, takes place in Indianapolis, IN July 30 – August 2, 1015.

Countdown to Gen Con T-7 and Counting Telestrations After Dark

I’m actually pretty excited about this game, here is the manufacturer description.

Our favorite party game is all grown up. Telestrations After Dark is the adults only version of the #1 LOL party game Telestrations. Draw what you see then guess what you saw for hilarious, weird, irresponsible and just plain wrong outcomes. Telestrations After Dark is “adults only” miscommunication at its best!

Ages 17+ | 4-8 Players | MSRP: $29.95

With that said I’ve been playing Telestrations pretty much since it’s conception.  I can only imagine what an adult version means.  I’m sure it’s done with great taste and style.  I find this to be one of the most intriguing releases of the year.  I only hope that as a reinvented game it doesn’t stray from it’s origin too much!

Steve Jackson Games Pulls Back The Curtain On New Target-Exclusive Munchkin Release

Munchkin OzAUSTIN, Texas (July 20, 2015) – Steve Jackson Games is proud to announce that we’ll be travelling to the Land of Oz with a brand new Munchkin game: Munchkin Oz! Based on L. Frank Baum’s classic children’s books, Munchkin Oz blends the stories’ whimsical characters and places with Munchkin’s own brand of zany backstabbing. Munchkin Oz has started appearing on shelves at some Target locations and will be available throughout the country and on target.com in early August 2015. This is the second such exclusive release in partnership with Target, after Munchkin Legends (in Target in 2013, released widely in 2014).

Fans who follow the Yellow Brick Road to Target and purchase Munchkin Oz will want to look for Steve Jackson Games at conventions and keep a close eye on Warehouse 23 (warehouse23.com), where they’ll find silver shoes special promotional cards and other goodies from August through December!

“It has been a lot of fun to revisit those classic stories that have delighted children (and adults!) for over a century,” said Andrew Hackard, Munchkin Line Editor. “In developing the game, we went back to our own roots to allow the players to be Professors, Royalty, Soldiers, or (of course!) Wizards. We can’t wait for our fans to adventure alongside Dorothy, the Scarecrow, and all of Baum’s classic heroes.”

About Steve Jackson Games

Steve Jackson Games, based in Austin, Texas, has been publishing games, game books, and magazines since 1980. Its best-selling game is Munchkin, with nearly 7 million copies of the games and supplements in print worldwide. Other top sellers are GURPS (the Generic Universal RolePlaying System), Zombie Dice, and Illuminati. Past hits have included Car Wars and Toon. Steve’s very first game, Ogre, originally released in 1977, drew almost a million dollars’ worth of Kickstarter support in 2012 for a super-deluxe edition, which was released in late 2013.

CLASSIC ROLEPLAYING GAME TORG RETURNS AS TORG ETERNITY

Ulisses Spiele Announces Return of Torg in New Updated Edition

CHANDLER, AZ (July 21, 2015) – Ulisses Spiele US, a division of Germany’s premiere game manufacturer and distributor, today announced the return of the influential Torg roleplaying game.

The new game is entitled Torg: Eternity, and is a new and updated take on the original game and its setting. The design team includes many who worked on the original Torg line that debuted from West End Games in 1990.

Torg co-creator Greg Gorden has been involved at a high level and given it his blessing: “I really like this re-imagining of the TORG mythos. The streamlining and modernization of the game mechanics feel spot on. I cannot wait to play this game!”

The game’s rights were sold after the closure of West End Games and were eventually purchased by Torg fan and president of Ulisses Spiele, Markus Plotz. “TORG is a one of a kind RPG. The setting is unique and for over 15 years, I dreamed about releasing a new and updated version. Now, with the help of the amazing Shane Hensley, that dream finally becomes reality!”

Shane Lacy Hensley heads up the United States studio where both Torg: Eternity and The Dark Eye are being created. “Though my plate is pretty full with my own company, Pinnacle Entertainment Group, I couldn’t resist working on the game that gave me my start. I also met a kindred spirit in Markus Plotz who truly loves and appreciates what a turning point Torg marked in RPG development, so I just couldn’t say no.”

Torg: Eternity will debut in 2016 in deluxe, full color hardback format.

When I was younger my peers would almost always think of two things when my name was brought up, martial arts and shooting. It was almost as if my name was synonymous with the thought. Fortunately for me, those that really knew me thought of Christianity and comic books as well. Looking back at the younger days, there are few things I remember more than the martial arts and shooting. Is that good or bad? I can’t really say, but it does bring me to some particular memories.

One of those relates to shooting, and it’s not about the sound of a bullet tearing through a paper target. It is the constant emphasis that culture of people puts on safety, and I’m not just talking about gun safety. There were times we would attend classes at military bases, for me that usually meant Camp Perry. As a shooter you have all kinds of responsibilities. One of those was being part of a team and pulling targets for the marksman. One of my most vivid memories is the army medics going up and down the line making sure you had enough water. It was almost always a quart per hour based on the level of exertion and the season. Which brings me to our first topic – avoiding dehydration.
