Being the fourth adventure book for Dungeons and Dragons 5th ed., it has a lot to live up to. Like Princes of Apocalypse, Out of the Abyss is also a full blown campaign for characters from levels 1 through 15. While it’s set in Forgotten Realms, it gives us a totally new look into this game world. It is the first look we get into the Underdark in 5th edition.

The first thing I noticed when reading this book was that it felt different or unique while still preserving a connection to Forgotten Realms. They did a good job of making the Underdark have a personality all its own. So many things they did make it a character that is dangerous, creepy, and weird. There are hints and reflections of psionics throughout the book, which brings a rising anticipation to the traditional Underdark motifs that we are used to, but with new interpretations and mechanics.

Giants have emerged from their strongholds to threaten civilization as never before. Hill giants are stealing all the grain and livestock they can while stone giants have been scouring settlements that have been around forever. Fire giants are press-ganging the smallfolk into the desert, while frost giant longships have been pillaging along the Sword Coast. Even the elusive cloud giants have been witnessed, their wondrous floating cities appearing above Waterdeep and Baldur’s Gate. Where is the storm giant King Hekaton, who is tasked with keeping order among the giants?

The humans, dwarves, elves, and other small folk of the Sword Coast will be crushed underfoot from the onslaught of these giant foes. The only chance at survival is for the small folk to work together to investigate this invasion and harness the power of rune magic, the giants’ weapon against their ancient enemy the dragons. The only way the people of Faerun can restore order is to use the giants’ own power against them.

This 256-page adventure for characters level 1 – 11+ provides everything a Dungeon Master needs to create an exciting and memorable play experience for the Storm King’s Thunder story, including rune magic items, a new treasure option for characters.

In this Flip Through Matt takes his first look at the Sword Coast Adventurer’s Guide.  I like the new class options the most.  Sword Coast is home to so many classic stories, like Baldur’s Gate, and Waterdeep, it’s a must have for any 5th ed player.

I this episode of Role-Play Ramblings Matt Lemke shares his gaming experiences with problem players, some of them include the wallflower,  philosopher, rules lawyer and even the instigator.  This short message is for Role-players at all levels of experience, but is most beneficial for GM’s.  These tips can be applied to any game system.

If you like this please like it please give it a thumbs up on YouTube and if you know someone who would enjoy it please share.  I had a lot of fun coming up with this seasons content and I would love to continue.

Next episode (targeted for Thursday) is “Who’s Telling the Story”. Is it the GM’s Story or the players?

Special Thanks to Owen K.C. Sthephens and Ryan Hale for their extra input on this season. I also have to thank all of my backers for making this happen.  I wouldn’t have had the drive to do this without their support!

In this flip Through Matt Takes a look at out of the Abyss.  I’ve always been a fan of the underdark and I love the role reversal they do with this title.  Most books are about delving into the darkeness, this one is about trying to run from it.  There are so many good things about this book.

I think it’s one of the best written adventure guides I’ve ever read.

The Underdark is a subterranean wonderland, a vast and twisted labyrinth where fear reigns. It is the home of horrific monsters that have never seen the light of day. It is here that the dark elf Gromph Baenre, Archmage of Menzoberranzan, casts a foul spell meant to ignite a magical energy that suffuses the Underdark and tears open portals to the demonic Abyss. What steps through surprises even him, and from that moment on, the insanity that pervades the Underdark escalates and threatens to shake the Forgotten Realms to its foundations. Stop the madness before it consumes you!

This screen is the perfect companion for those Dungeon Masters running the Out of the Abyss adventure, or any trek into the Underdark.
